Quenya: 'Elven Latin'?
Quenya is the speech of the High Elves. The Quenya we know from The Lord of
the Rings is actually Noldorin, being the dialect of the Noldor, who are
the High Elves who crossed the Helcaraxë to come back to Middle-Earth to regain the
Silmarilli of Fëanor, that were stolen in Valinor.
Sindarin: The Common Speech of the Elves in Middle-Earth.
Sindarin became the spoken toungue of all Elves in Middle-Earth when king Thingol
of Doriath issued an edict that no-one was to speak Quenya in his land,
after hearing of the atrocities committed by the Noldor under the command of Fëanor.
